Microsoft has decided to end the life of Cortana (Windows virtual assistant) and it will be replaced by a new, much more advanced assistant, called Copilot.
In case someone is still on Windows 7 and has not been able to use it, Cortana is a virtual assistant developed by Microsoft. It was first released in 2014 as part of the Windows Phone operating system and later expanded to other Microsoft products and platforms such as Windows 10, Xbox One, and Microsoft Edge.
Cortana was made to help users with a variety of tasks, from searching the web to setting reminders and sending emails. It uses speech recognition to interpret and respond to user requests.
In addition to its basic functionality, Cortana can also integrate with other Microsoft apps and services, Outlook, and Office.
Cortana has also been available on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, both on Microsoft operating systems such as iOS and Android.
Copilot is a system based on OpenAI’s GPT-4 Long Language Model (LLM), also used by ChatGPT and Bing Chat. This will allow Windows users to interact with Copilot using natural language, receiving responses in a concise, easy-to-understand format that integrates with the various features of the operating system.
If, for example, a user asks Copilot how they can work more comfortably on their computer, Copilot might suggest different options, such as turning on dark mode at night or rearranging the desktop. A simple click on the response would allow the user to perform the action without having to navigate through the configuration menus.
Cortana was a very limited assistant and not very used, in addition to not allowing much room for improvement, according to the multinational, and was in a “dead end” due to the way in which it was thought and implemented. That is why they have decided to “retire” it and replace it with something much better.
Copilot has a much higher level of versatility and utility, as it is based on artificial intelligence. You will be able to perform a wide range of assistance tasks, such as summarizing the content of a document or generating texts or lists. Copilot will remain active on the side of the screen, operating in the context of the application that is currently in use. Copilot will begin rolling out to Windows 11 starting in June, initially as a limited test for a small group of users, but will be rolled out over the summer.
